What is Graston Technique?
Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy known as instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization. It is one of several manual therapy approaches that utilizes instrumentation in a specialized manner to break up myofascial adhesions by massaging/scraping the skin gently.
Why IASTM?
Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization has been proven to improve range of motion and restore function in patients from professional athletes to weekend warriors. This technique is activating mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors within the muscle leading to repair and strengthening of that muscle. It is used in our office on a variety of patients for a wide range of diagnoses such as:
- Tennis and/or Golfer’s Elbow
- Low back pain
- Runners knee pain
- Scar tissue
- Muscle pain and tightness
All the above benefit from IASTM or instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization techniques.
How is it done?
First, the muscle knots/trigger points are located. Next, the tissue is scanned lightly with very little pressure to assess specific areas of concern using a stainless-steel instrument. Finally, when restrictions or “grit” are found within the scanned area the pressure is increased to loosen up the muscle tissue. The process is like a massage technique differing by addressing a focal area of concern or restriction versus an entire region of concern. A therapeutic discomfort may be noticed as well as a mild redness after the 15-20-minute procedure.
At Bridge Chiropractic we offer IASTM using Graston trained techniques in combination with other protocols to help our patients on their journey to optimal health and improved function.
