Chiropractic for Breastfeeding Support
Are you a new mom, or do you know someone who is? Many people know that chiropractic helps with much more than back pain, but may not know that breastfeeding issues is one of them!
A baby’s ability to latch is a complex process involving many muscles and joints. Chiropractic adjustments help keep these structures relaxed and functioning so that your baby has the best opportunity to succeed with breastfeeding.
One common complaint among mothers is that the baby feeds well on one side, but not on the other. Often this can be due to range of motion issues in the baby’s neck. If it is uncomfortable for them to turn their head to one side, they will have more trouble latching and feeding on that breast. Gentle adjustments can help restore correct motion in the neck so feeding is comfortable on both sides.
As part of the comprehensive pediatric exam in our office, primitive reflexes including the sucking reflex are checked. If your baby has a diminished sucking reflex, they may not be able to get as much milk during a feed and may seem to get frustrated. Adjustments of the cranial bones including the palate can help the baby create a better latch and stronger suck.
Breastfeeding can be challenging, but is so healthy for both mom and baby. Chiropractic is another piece to add to your support team. Adjustments can help both mom and baby be more comfortable while nursing. Call the office with questions or to see how we can help!
